WECAN (West End/Clingman Avenue Neighborhood) is an all volunteer neighborhood association that includes some of Asheville's River Arts District. Bounded by Patton Avenue to the north, Clingman Avenue to the east, Lyman Stree to the south and the French Broad River to the west, WECAN meets the first Thurday of every month @ 6:30pm @ 64 Clingman Avenue in the Mountain Housing Opportunities Jessie Nell Coleman Community Room on the first floor of Merritt Park Apartments.
Besides Adopt a Highway clean ups & WECAN garden club projects, WECAN stays involved in anything that comes its way... 2010 is seeing the 6 year Clingman Streetscape Project getting built. We have given input as to the I-26 connector project, re-opening the pedestrian bridge to Hillcrest, participated in the Aston Gateway Community Board & helped bring new playground equipment to Aston Park. It has been a busy year.
2011 has us looking at the Wilma Dykeman RAD Transportation Improvement Plan, working with the City of Asheville on the feasibility Urban Bike Skill Park, community gardens & The Clingman Forest Greenway. We also hope to have a parade/ribbon cutting for the Clingman Streetscape Project, once it is completed.
